On the Basement Coffee House

I’ve decided to follow in the footsteps of my sweet (and awesomely named) friend, Mrs Fiona Koefoed-Jespersen.

After she moved to Brussels three years ago she dedicated a page to her blog to record her favourite places to visit (and eat at) in her new city. You can find it here.

I’ve been living in Newcastle for just over two months now, but, God willing, I hope to be here at least 3 years, and very probably quite a lot longer than that, so I thought I might start a page to plug my favourite places to see, things to do, and most importantly, places to drink coffee and/or eat delicious things, in my fair city and its surrounding area. Hopefully you’ll find these interesting – and useful if you happen to be moving here yourself, coming for a visit, or passing through on your way somewhere else.

First on my list is the Basement Coffee House.

This is my new daytime hangout, and I absolutely love it.

As the name suggests, it’s a cafe. It’s in town. And it is owned and run by one of the churches, the rather too-cool-for-school-named ‘The House’. They serve lovely drinks: really beautiful, delicious coffee, lots of wonderful loose-leaf teas, hot chocolates (if that kind of things floats your boat) and importantly, Diet Coke. And lovely foods, including some amazing, amazing brioche.

It’s a great setting: good music, lots of comfy, leather sofas and armchairs, a stage for hosting the Friday night acoustic nights (and frequent open mic events put on by both of the CUs), and a pool table that only costs 20p a game.

And, most wonderful of all, it’s managed by the lovely & super-cool tattooed, pierced and American pastor’s wife: my sweet friend, Tammy.

Oh, and it’s really cheap too. Bonus.

So, my first recommendation done. Here’s a map so you can find it if you want to.

And here’s some photos of it.

In summary: coffee venue for the win.
