Do you ever play the ‘If I had all the money in the world’ game?
I do, now and then, and one of the first things to go on my shopping list is a house in the country, preferably one with ‘castle’, ‘hall’, ‘abbey’, or ‘palace’ in its title.
What is required of that house is varied and changing, but one constant is seen in the gardens. There must be orchards, and fields, and lawns, and herbs, and some sort of water feature (ideally, a small lake), and naturally there must be a small team of gardeners to actually do the gardening, and there must be a walled garden. I do love a good walled garden, with gates and doors to open and reveal any number of horticultural secrets.
Today provided a little bit of fancy garden bliss, as we visited Acorn Bank (near Temple Sowerby) and enjoyed many, many garden gates.
In summary: gates.
